Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia surgery, or male breast surgery, refers to a procedure used to decrease breast tissue among men. Gynecomastia surgery allows men to feel more confident with their shirt off while providing a more masculine and chiseled chest.
Treatment Time
1.5-2 hours; the procedure is completed under general anesthesia so proper care can be taken to remove all breast tissue and minimize patient discomfort.
Incisions
Incisions are made around the lower half of the nipple so they camouflage well. Occasionally in severe gynecomastia incisions are made vertically and horizontally along the breast but this is uncommonly needed.
Benefits
Males find that gynecomastia surgery is liberating as it provides relief from unwanted breast tissue, a better chest contour, uses small well camouflaged incisions, and more confidence when removing your shirt.
Technique
A small incision is made along the lower half of the nipple and breast tissue is directly visualized and resected beneath the nipple. Commonly liposuction is also used to contour the chest shape and remove further unwanted breast tissue.
Recovery
Incisions are healed after 1 week and bruising and swelling persists for 2 weeks. Final results take between 1-2 months to appear as the soft tissue of the breast contracts after surgery.
Risks
The main risks include bleeding, infection, fat necrosis, wound healing issues, numbness of the nipple, and over or under resection. It is uncommon for patients to need secondary procedures in gynecomastia.
Who are the best candidates?
Males with self esteem issues due to breast tissue, otherwise healthy, non smokers, and who can adhere to postoperative protocols including chest compression for 4-6 weeks.
Adjunct Procedures
Gynecomastia surgery is usually completed as a sole operation however can easily be combined with other body procedures such as male abdominoplasty, thighplasty, or liposuction.
