Facelift

A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a procedure designed to address signs of aging in the lower face, jaw, and neck. The goal of the procedure is to provide a youthful and brighter version of yourself while keeping your natural appearance.  â€‹A facelift is often performed in conjunction with other procedures such as a brow lift, upper blepharoplasty, and facial fat grafting.

Treatment Time

Generally 4-6 hours, however it depends on type of facelift employed and other adjunctive procedures. Dr. McGuire is trained in the most advanced technique called the deep plane face and neck lift which provides lasting results, however generally takes longer than standard facelift techniques.

Incisions

Facelift incisions start in front of the ear and are camouflaged in a natural skin fold. In front of the ear they travel upwards just behind the hairline. They also continue behind the ear following the hairline in a gentle curve. Overall, scars are well hidden post-operatively and will eventually fade to a thin white scar with proper care. Two drains are used.

Benefits

The main benefits of a facelift include reducing creases in the face, smoothing out the neck and jawline profile, removing fat from beneath the chin, and tightening the facial muscles to provide a more youthful appearance.

Technique

There are multiple variations on the facelift technique. A deep plane facelift, the preferred technique of Dr. McGuire, relies on tightening a layer of tissue above the facial muscles called the SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system). The deep plane technique relies on the deep tissues to provide a natural tightening effect, so the skin itself does not appear tight or unnatural. This technique, while requiring advanced training and expertise, generally has more profound and longer lasting results.

Recovery

4-6 weeks. Most people feel comfortable going out in public in two weeks, however heavy activity is best avoided for four weeks. By six weeks the face may still have swelling but is approaching its final, refreshed form. The final results can be expected after two to three months.

Risks

As with any procedure there are surgical risks. The mains risks of facelift surgery include bleeding, infection, wound healing troubles, damage to underlying structures (facial nerve and salivary glands), surgical anesthetic, and asymmetry. These risks will be discussed in depth during your consultation with Dr. McGuire and a detailed consent form will be reviewed.

Who are the best candidates?

Patients who have been thinking about changing their facial appearance for years, signs of facial aging (skin laxity, jowls, deep nasolabial folds, etc.) otherwise quite healthy, and non-smokers. It is crucial patients considering a facelift have realistic expectations.

Adjunct Procedures

Commonly patients undergo a facelift procedure with other procedures for a more complete facial rejuvenation. Common procedures include upper blepharoplasty, lower blepharoplasty, brow lift, and facial fat grafting. Each adjunct procedure has its own risk and benefit profile.
